American Apparel, What Next?
Walking along Portobello Road today past the American Apparel shop this pop's out at me as being either an attempt at ironic Vice Magazine / Terry Richardson style advertising, or perhaps it is just a coincidence that the news has been recently awash with Doc Charney's tendencies towards young girls? I'm not saying that I don't like this style of advertising which is somewhat passé now, I do like it, but no-one should have to suffer any kind of sexual or mental harassment full stop.
An interesting article I found on Bloomberg Business week from 2005 clearly shows that Dov Charney's sexual antics in the workplace are nothing new, yet has merely been brought to light by the recent claims by Irene Morales. Morales's lawyers claim in court documents that "She was, to all intents and purposes, held prisoner in his apartment for several hours and forced to perform additional sex acts upon defendant Charney.''
I've never been convinced of American Apparel with regards to ethics anyway, as their subsidised American cotton is contributing to the inability of the West African cotton traders to trade in an open, equal and free market place.
'Cotton is the most used natural fibre in the world and should be the ‘white gold’ that propels ten million West African farmers out of poverty. But the West African cotton industry is being obstructed by a wall of subsidies dished out by the United States and European Union to their own farmers'. This extract is taken from a great article from www.fairtrade.org.uk which, if you have any interest in commodities trading, clothing/fashion or world economics I would definitely suggest you read!

Seana Gavin / Object of Desire
Sat here just about to polish off a bit of lamb roast, with my lovely talented friend Seana Gavin. Seana has recently completed a set of surreal collages for AnOther Magazine entitled Object of Desire which display Burberry Prorsum's A/W11 Accessories. Take a look at her interview with AnOther Magazine.

Claudia Schiffer
Flawless skin, golden hair spun by angels with body to die for.... I spotted Claudia 'one of the original super models, who lead the way often in a bikini' Schiffer getting on the same Eurostar train I was on back from Paris. After some contemplation I made the journey through to first class, and approached her with my card....lets hope she/her agent gets in touch and wears some Black Neon Swimwear on her next holiday!

Vintage Hermes
Merci, Paris / Aurelie Bidermann
An indigo storm hit me as I walked into Merci, Paris, birds flying in a beautiful space circled indigo blue clothing, table wear, napkins, and cushions. Its not often that a theme, or colour can take over very large space, spanning over anything you could wear or use in the home, but at Merci nothing is impossible. I wouldn't say that the essence of the store is something that I personally identify with, as it is neither harsh, angular, slick, glossy or alternatively ornate and vintage, which is the styles I prefer and often like to contrast in one image, image or vision, however I can see that Merci has huge appeal and is great for the modern disconcerning customer. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
I loved these gold Cowry earrings by Aurelie Bidermann. Cowrie shells are are often used in jewellery, associated with the beach but also symbolic of money. The shells were used for centuries as a currency in Africa. Huge amounts of Maldivian cowries were introduced into Africa by western nations during the period of slave trade. The Ghanaian unit of currency known as the Ghanaian cedi was named after cowry shells. Starting over three thousand years ago, cowry shells, or copies of the shells, were used as Chinese currency. They were also used as means of exchange in India. The Classical Chinese character for money originated as a stylized drawing of a cowrie shell. Also they are also viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth. The symbolism of the cowry shell is associated with the appearance of its underside: the lengthwise opening makes the shell look like a vulva or an eye. There are alot of hidden signs in life, so next time you pick up one of these on the beach on holiday...its not just a shell!

Paris Fashion Week - Chloe Fall 2011
A packed out show, with models marching down the catwalk to the opening track by Jay Z, part of a sound track put together by YOYO's (and Lily Allen's X) Seb Chew and John Gosling. The clothes varied in style, direction and fabric usage, which included a block coloured wool patchwork coat and trousers, 70's high waisted denim jeans, static leather jackets and snake skin print chiffon. My favourite piece of the show as a natural coloured snake skin print chiffon dress, shown below. Spotted in the front row was the stunning Bonnie Chen.
